The Kentucky Core Content for Assessment

Yes, Kentucky Core Content Test (KCCT) is coming! Featured in this issue are selected topics from the Kentucky Core Content for Assessment, the basis for state testing since September 1999. For each of the content areas, a resource is included, and the Kentucky Core Content item (boxed in gray) associated with the lesson is cited. We've also included information about Kentucky Teacher Academies associated with each discipline (for additional classes, look to this list of funded Academies).

On-line Lesson Planning Writing our Soldiers

This month, our "On-Line Lesson Planning" is a single idea with a variety of resources. Letter writing to our troops is a great writing and social studies learning tool, and an important service for our troops abroad! There are several resources you can use if you want your class to write soldiers deployed in the Middle East, or anywhere else. Here's a few...

  • Stars and Stripes Messages of Support: http://www.stripes.com/03/mar03/support303.html - The venerable soldier's newsletter prints in each issue dozens of messages of support sent to them. This web page has some other resources as well, including pages specific to several branches of the Armed Forces.
  • Adopt A Platoon: http://www.adoptaplatoon.org/  Managed by mothers of soldiers, Adopt A Platoon serves as a clearinghouse for several levels of support, from individual soldiers to whole platoons! Great class project!
  • Operation Enduring Response: http://www.enduringresponse.com/ A monthly letter-writing project sponsored by the Red Cross.

Here's an article in WebMD.com about how to talk to your kids about war.
