In keeping with the upcoming holiday spirit, here's a collection of teaching and information resources aimed at holiday celebrations of all kinds - across the state and across the globe! This theme has been a recurring one  - be sure to see our December 6, 2002 issue for more holiday resources.

The Multi Cultural Calendar

Kidlink (featured in the April 18, 2003 edition of The Partnership Help Desk) is an international resource by kids and for kids. This calendar includes links to hundreds and hundreds of descriptions of holidays from around the globe, most written by the kids who celebrate them. The links are sorted by month, holiday, country, and author. There are over 80 countries and almost 500 holidays represented!

The Teacher Source is a database of over 4,000 teaching ideas and lessons, plus other services,  maintained by the Public Broadcasting Service, and arranged by monthly themes. The December 2001 theme is aimed at music, dance, and theatre, and has several clever ideas, including ideas on Kwanzaa which features the official Kwanzaa website, and a lesson on parody poetry based on "Twas the Night Before Christmas" for older students (see right).

Here's a site dedicated to the needs of P-12 health and PE teachers. Begun by then-Virginia Polytechnic Institute professor Mark Mantross and sponsored by FlagHouse, Inc., PE Central is free, and chock full of materials and suggestions for PE and health lessons. Be sure to check out their collection of holiday activities!

What fun! In an activity tied to NCTM standards, this lesson plans uses Pascal's Triangle to figure out the total number of gifts accumulated in the famous Christmas song! This lesson comes from Rutger's Center for Discrete Mathematics and Computer Science K-8 Leadership program.

Part of NASA's Book on the Web From Stargazers to Starships by David P. Stern, this collection of high school activities is about how our calendar (and many others) was constructed. The ideas are related to astronomy and history, and the lessons are constructed to support this page of calendar information.
