Educational Journals

The June 13, 2003 issue of The Partnership Help Desk focused on the professional organizations which serve as a source of guidance, inspiration, collegiality, and curriculum standards. For this issue, we'll focus on the professional journals they provide. Many are free with membership, some are delivered online, and all are a source of information and inspiration! I have included here only those journals that deliver at least a part of their content through the Web - most (but not all) do. Take a few minutes over the winter break to research these important resources. Of course, the best idea is to join, and subscribe!

General Publications and Journals Middle School Journal

http://www.nmsa.org/

Middle School Journal is a publication of the National Middle School Association, and features research, policy, and professional development articles on the middle school movement. It's published five times yearly, and selected articles are published online. Since NMSA's website is framed, you must browse to the journal's online presence using the "Services and Resources" link. For quick, easy-to-read articles on middle school interests, don't miss Middle MattersMiddle Matters, a completely online e-zine published three times yearly.

NEA TodayNEA Today

http://www.nea.org/neatoday/

As you might expect, this national teacher professional organization features articles from a teacher advocacy perspective. The current month (December, 2003) focuses on surviving a lawsuit. The entire periodical is published online, so you don't have to join to read these timely and insightful articles!

KappanPhi Delta Kappan

http://www.pdkintl.org/kappan/ktoc.htm

Phi Delta Kappa is a public education advocacy organization, and The Kappan features articles by some of the most celebrated minds in education. Subscription to The Kappan is included with membership, but feature articles from the periodical are published online each month.

This is the flagship periodical from the National Association of Secondary School Principals. They offer two versions aimed at middle and high schools, respectively. Leading articles are published online each month. NASSP also offers the research-based journal Bulletin (an article by UK's Thomas Guskey is online), and several other publications.

PrincipalPrincipal

The National Association of Elementary School Principals publishes this K-8-aimed periodical. Members of NAESP can access articles in their entirety online, but lead articles are open to all. Especially nice is the "Printer friendly" option, which presents each page in a much more printable form. There are a variety of other publications, including the e-newsletter Before the Bell.

The Arts Teaching MusicTeaching Music

Two of the most useful periodicals for P-12 music educators offered by the National Association for Music Education include Music Educators Journal, aimed at music education policy and current trends, and Teaching Music, a hands-on resource for music teachers. Feature articles are offered online. [Although the National Art Education Association publishes the excellent Journal of Art Education, no part of it is available online.]

Health and Physical Education

Physical Education DigestPhysical Education Digest

http://www.aahperd.org/naspe/template.cfm?template=strategies_main.html

This small, informative PE publication is mostly collections of how-to hints and ideas on a wide range of sports, with some general topics. The entire journal is available only online in PDF format by subscription, but many articles and at least one entire edition are offered for free as samples. [None of the publications of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, and Dance - the PE/Health umbrella organization - are offered in any form online.]

Language Arts

Language ArtsClassroom Notes Plus

The National Council of Teachers of English offers several journal, including the secondary-aimed Classroom Notes Plus, a collection of hands-on teaching ideas and resources. All of NCTE's publications (including its elementary/middle-aimed Language Arts, Voices from the Middle, and high school English Journal) are offered online to subscribers, but I could find free excerpts only from this one. Colorado State University offers English Journal On the Web, which gives online links appearing in that journal, plus a few features.

Access to all articles is offered by subscription, but members of NCTM can purchase individual articles from journals to which they are not subscribed.

Social Studies Social EducationSocial Education

The National Council for the Social Studies offers a featured story from its secondary-aimed Social Education in PDF format online. None of its other publications offer this service.
