Attention, Professional Developers! Vol. 3, #15 of The Partnership Help Desk will feature summer professional development (PD) opportunities. If you, your school, your district, or your local university/college is offering summer PD open to other KY teachers, send us a note - we'll include  it!

Happy Birthday!Happy Valentine's Day! Happy President's Day! Happy Leap Year Day! Happy Black History Month!

Who says February is the "blah month" of the school year?! Not us! Here comes a grab-bag of resources that match the spirit of this packed-full month!

On-line lesson planning Teachers Network OrgTeachers Network Org

http://teachersnetwork.org/

Based in New York, with content supplied by other teachers, this extensive website has lots of lesson plans and online activities for a variety of levels and subjects. There are no ties to standards, and some don't have complete materials and assessment support, but the ideas are fresh and real!

The Arts National Museum for the American IndianNMAI

http://www.nmai.si.edu/

Look in Education/Teaching Materials for two lovely and rich PDF-format lesson plans. One is on the history and design of quilts, with extensive information on current practitioners and techniques. There are activities, study questions, and an extensive list of support materials and references. The other, appropriate for social studies, is a PDF lesson focusing on the first Thanksgiving from an American Indian perspective, including information on the Wampanoag trime today. [editor's note: the number of lesson plans is now four, 7/12/04]

Mathematics and Science

SMILESMILE

http://www.iit.edu/~smile/

For almost 20 years, Illinois Institute of Technology students, with contributions from classroom teachers, have been delivering lesson plans from a phenomenological viewpoint. The results are accumulated in book form, CDROM, and this crude and buried-in-smiley website. Most plans are strictly text sketches, though the site also contains interactive online lessons through it's SMART program. Perhaps the most well know initiative is the 27-year-old International Bridge Building project. Don't look for any fancy search engine or by-grade listing - strictly subject indexed.

Reading

Book AdventureBook Adventure

http://www.bookadventure.org/

This K-8 reading support program is a free initiative of the Sylvan Learning Center. It provides a personalized (registration is required, but is free and private) environment where young readers can select from reading lists, take short quizzes on their books, and win prizes. There's extensive support including a teacher's area.

Social Studies Black History MonthBlack History Month resources

http://www.gp.k12.mi.us/ci/ce/multi/bhmes.htm (K-5)
http://www.gp.k12.mi.us/ci/ce/multi/bhmmhs.htm (6-12)

Michigan's Grosse Point Public Schools provide these simple one-page en masse collections of online links in support of Black History Month.  Reviewed and offered on Kathy Schrock's web resource page. And don't forget The Partnership Help Desk's January 24, 2003 issue, which is also packed with resources!

Writing OWLOnline Writing Lab

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/

This web service is mostly a support site for Purdue University's writing lab. However, there are extensive handouts appropriate for high school and ESL students on an incredible range of writing topics. Use the pull-down menus at the top for quick access, though you'll have to browse some!
