It's...The Partnership Help Desk's Greatest Hits!

This week we do a little self-indulgent nostalgia, with a look back over nearly two years of editions and changes. We especially focus on the themed editions - issues that were aimed specifically at certain topics or needs, or had other significance. We hope that you will take a few moments and wander down memory lane with us! All links on these archive editions are still current, except where noted.

 

Historical highlights

The Very First Help Desk http://www.emck.net/eline/02_05_10.htm When we started, The Middle Level Academies and Region Service Centers were still active. In the first edition we featured The Awesome Library (still awesome now!) and the National Middle School Association. Other historical highlights: The logo changed with Volume 2, #4 (http://www.emck.net/eline/02_09_27.htm), and again this past fall.  Confusion with the KETS Help Desk caused a name change beginning with Volume 3, #1 (http://www.emck.net/eline/03_08_08.htm). Along the way we also shed our middle school focus.

Themed Editions

Vol. 2, #14: Weather http://www.emck.net/eline/03_02_21.htm Inspired by the horrendous ice storm of 2003 (which delayed our release by over a week!), this edition included links to educational resources on Weather.com  The Arts Toolkits from Kentucky Educational Television, featured in this edition, have since expanded to include one on dance, due out this summer (they're taking advance orders now). Negotiating the Internet There were several editions which focused on the mechanics of the Internet... Vol 1, #7: Members-only sites (http://www.emck.net/eline/02_07_05.htm) - How best to handle websites that require registration. This edition also includes a list of plug-ins your browser needs to see some sites. Vol 1, #9:  Domain Names and Types  (http://www.emck.net/eline/02_08_02.htm) - This edition has a discussion of the domain types - "dot-com," "dot-org," etc. Vol 2, #7: Search Engines (http://www.emck.net/eline/02_11_08.htm) -  Finding stuff yourself... Vol 3, #5: Web Page Design Tools (http://www.emck.net/eline/03_10_03.htm) - HTML and other tutorials, plus software. Volume 2, #15: Contests and Awards http://www.emck.net/eline/03_03_07.htm Just in time for the Oscars, this edition provided access to websites providing competitions and awards for your students. Most are still current, though the Christopher Columbus Awards now has their own web domain at http://www.christophercolumbusawards.com/.  Publications Vol 2, #2: Online publications  (http://www.emck.net/eline/02_08_30.htm) - E-zines and other electronic periodicals.  Vol 2, #23: Print Periodicals (http://www.emck.net/eline/03_06_27.htm) - reviews of the web support for Time, Newsweek, U.S. News, and others with educational uses.  Vol. 3, #10: Professional journals (http://www.emck.net/eline/03_12_12.htm)  Volume 2, #18: Online Collaboration http://www.emck.net/eline/03_04_18.htm E-communications and the web is ready-made for collaborative projects. This edition gives several resources and projects aimed at connecting your students with other classes/countries/disciplines.  Volume 2, #21: Grants, Awards http://www.emck.net/eline/03_05_30.htm Funding grant sources appropriate to individual teachers were featured in this edition. All links are still current. The featured list of KVHS professional development opportunities is out of date, but they still offer PD online.  Vol 2, #22: Professional Organizations http://www.emck.net/eline/03_06_13.htm  Beyond this fine list, we could add the following National Association of Elementary School Principals, http://www.nassp.org/ National School Board Association, http://www.nsba.org/ Association for Educational Communications and Technology, http://www.aect.org/
