Summer Professional Development Opportunities

Here's a smattering of the offerings available to teachers in Kentucky - the ones that have recently crossed my desk, that is!

  • The Kentucky Summer Teacher Academies - Featured in our April 16, 2004 edition, registration deadlines have passed for some, but not for all!
  • Novice Teacher Writing Workshop - This offering by Todd Merrick in conjunction with Murray State Community College  is aimed at beginning teachers of writing  (1-3 years experience). The deadline is May 24! Contact Mayda Ragsdale, MSU Community College, 101 Lowry, Murray, KY 42071 or fax to (270) 762-3972.
  • Kentucky Association of Technology Coordinators Summer Camp - KATC, affiliated with the International Society for Technology in Education, offers this every summer. The Arts SCASCA Dance Music MP3 Collection

http://ieee.uwaterloo.ca/praetzel/mp3-cd/

It's hard to believe, but this site, hosted under the IEEE Student Branch of Canada's University of Waterloo by Eric Praetzel, has several CDs of music completely free for download. The music is early and medieval dance music played on the original instruments. They're in MP3 format, and Eric even offers the CD covers in zipped format (the PDF links are all broken, as far as I can see). There are a variety of links to related resources, all under the umbrella of the idiosyncratic Society for Creative Anachronism.

Mathematics

Tools for UnderstandingTools for Understanding

http://www.ups.edu/community/tofu/

Here's an unusual resource - lessons and units aimed at the teacher of struggling middle school or high school special needs students. The site includes math, as well as integrated  lessons, and lessons using journaling. There's support research as well. Offered by John Woodward of the University of Puget Sound.

Published by the International Reading Association, this online journal is full of articles and interactive content aimed at teachers who teach reading. The articles are fully juried, come in online and pintable formats, and include a wide range of topics aimed at a diverse and international audience. Good summer reading!

Science Science NetLinksScience NetLinks

http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/

Maintained by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, with support from MarcoPolo, this site is full of standards-driven lesson plans and activities. Some come with printable resources, some have interactive content delivered online. An excellent resource for K-12!

Social Studies GeoSenseGeoSense

http://www.geosense.net/

It's simple and fun! It's a game about international geography. You can play it alone, or you can instantly pair with anyone else who happens to be on the site with you, and compete. Teachers can request exclusive class sessions for just their students as well. It's quite simple, and a good test of your knowledge of geography!
