School's out!
Well, not for everyone...some Kentucky schools have been out for a few days,
and others won't be out for a few more. But it's coming!
As summer comes on, this edition of The E-Line
focuses on online learning possibilities for those months ahead. Online learning
is often much maligned and feared by many school districts as a threat to traditional
face-to-face classroom instruction. But for many students, including those of us
pursuing professional development and further degrees and certifications in the
summer, it can
be a very useful tool. Always vigilant for the "teachable moment," we start
with a little history...
Great
Britain's Open UniversityThe
Open University accepted its first students in 1971, and now supports the
academic studies of over 200,000 students, making it the largest university of
its kind anywhere in the world. Its intent is to deliver education to
under-served populations - the disabled or challenged, members of the armed services overseas, prisoners,
and others for whom moving to a university campus would be an economic impossibility. The
Open University has no entrance requirements, allowing students to begin
at their own level and work at their own pace. Its courses are now delivered
entirely online.
