The Olympics! The Athens Olympic games crank up in just a couple of weeks! Thanks to Alison James, Toowoomba Christian College, Queensland, Australia and other members of the EDTECH LISTSERV for contributing much of this collection of instructional resources for use with the 2004 Olympic Games. Perfect for that hit-the-ground-running beginning of the year activity!

Like a lot of websites these days, the Web address directly to the teaching resource page of this, the official games site, is too long to print. Click here to go there directly, or browse the following sequence of steps from the above link: Get Involved/Youth 2004/Library(Educational Programme in Olympism)/Olympic Education Materials. The site offers several large PDF-format activity and information sheets on the Summer Games aimed at several grade level clusters, from 6-9 year old to high school. There is also a 173-page fairy tale bursting with information about Greece, the Games, and its various participants. Look under The Olympic Games are Inspiring! for pictures of class activities from around the globe.

These are student information pages from Scholastic Magazine's online presence. There are teacher lesson plans for all grades, with hints and helps for how to use the resources in the classroom.

EdGate is a pay subscription service to educators, schools, and districts, but they offer this collection of resources on the Olympic Summer Games for free. There are a collection of plans from Griffin Publishing and others, plus another cluster from efg Educational Resources, a partner company.

The Amateur Athletic Foundation, funded by fiscal surpluses from the 1984 Los Angeles Games, provides this series of PDF format cross-curricular and content-tied activities and lessons for grades 3-5. Not specifically tied to the 2004 games, but full of ideas, and printable!

Activities Integrating Math and Science (AIMS) is a non-profit offering curriculum matching its name. Most of its materials are for sale, but they offer a few things in PDF format for free use.
