Summer....
As
we enter summer vacation here in Kentucky,
The E-Line
moves to a more leisurely pace. In this general
issue you can find...
- Some examples of the online professional
development classes available from two
State-sponsored initiatives - KyEducators.Org (from
the Educational Professional Standards Board using
the KYVU shell), and KVHS (from the Kentucky
Department of Education). These fee-based PD courses
are anytime, anywhere, delivered to your browser in
the comfort of your own home! (Don't forget...in
Kentucky, PD credit is awarded by schools - check with
your PD committee chair or principal before taking one
of these offerings.)
- The second in a series on
innovative education professionals - this edition is
on David Warlick.
- Some subject-specific resources below.
Welcome to summer!

Eye
of Science
http://www.eyeofscience.de
This wonderful
collection of stunning visual
images produced by electron
microscopy, underwater
photography, and other
technologies qualifies as both
fascinating art, and descriptive
science. It's the work of German
photographer Oliver Meckes and
biologist Nicole Ottawa. Be sure
to look at every page of the
site...there are a lot of images! |

Health/ Practical Living |
The
Sustainable Table
http://www.sustainabletable.org/
This resource of
the Global Resource Action Center
for the Environment strongly
reflects the environmental and
political leanings of its
developer. There are informational
pages on a variety of subjects,
but for us, the most important
resource is the collection of
links to lesson plans under
"Teacher Resources," linked in
"Sustainable Foods in Schools." |
|
Math |
The National
Math Trail
http://www.nationalmathtrail.org/
From the Foundation
for Advancements in Science and
Education, with funding from the
US Department of Education, NEC,
and Verizon, this resource is an
attempt to create a clearinghouse
of mathematics problems based on
regional issues. Membership is
free, and submissions are accepted
from anywhere. The submitted
problems are browseable by state
or country, and there are some
math-related technology tutorials
on the site. |

Trilingual,
stunning, interactive, and heavily
loaded with real images of real
artifacts from anchient Egypt,
this wonderful resource was
created by the Egyptian Center for
Documentation of Cultural and
Natural Heritage (CultNat), with
underwriting and technical support
from IBM. The site has dozens of
navigation methods by which you
can browse its collections,
including connections between
artifacts, maps, and time lines.
There's even an introductory video
available from the site. |

This interesting
and research-based collection of
resources supports a contractual
relationship between home and
school to improve reading skills
for K-3 students. The entirety of
the projects resources, including
activities, are available from the
site in PDF format for download.
These resources are a joint

[editor's note:
The
November 12, 2004 edition of The
E-Line featured education innovators
Larry Johnson and Annette Lamb.
During this summer, we'll be
featuring other innovators and
education technologists. - jll]
David
Warlick
http://davidwarlick.com,
http://landmark-project.com/
David's career in education
and technology innovation has spanned
settings from the private sector, the
classroom, positions at the district level,
to the North Carolina State Department of
Public Instruction. His programming,
primarily
through his
Landmark Project, has spawned dozens of
innovative (and mostly free) resources for
educators, the most familiar of which (for
Kentucky educators) might be his
Citation Machine. He is an extensive
writer, presenter, and blogger on the issue
of educational innovation through
technology, including three books. His
latest project is a clearinghouse for
podcasts relating to education called
The Education
Podcast Network (EPN). Besides his very
popular blog, David's remarks and
contributions can be found on many of the
leading educational technology
e-publications and email discussion lists. |
