Welcome to the E-Line...
...for the 2005-06 school year! |
|
|

In this issue: Helps for new teachers, and first-day class
resources! |
The seven things... students want to
know on the first day of school (from Harry
Wong):
- Am I in the right room?
- Where am I supposed to sit?
- What will I be doing this year?
- How will I be graded?
- What are the rules in this classroom?
- Will the teacher treat me as a human being?
- Who is the teacher as a person?
Of course, students aren't always the ones who are lost! Here's
the new teacher's list (pay attention, principals!):
- Where is MY room?
- Where do I get all the stuff I need?
- What are the rules of the school?
- What will I be teaching? Or, where is the curriculum and
the plan?
- How will I be evaluated?
- Who is the principal as a person? Or, are they real people,
too?
- Will I be accepted by the principal, other teachers, staff
and students?
(...from Leila Minnis at California
Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment)
We hope that you find your room, your stuff, and all the rest! In
case you don't, or you're having all those crazy dreams teachers have just
before the kids storm in, here's some sources for ideas to get things started! (Hey,
veteran teachers: Pass this on to your new teachers too!) |

Survival
Guide for New Teachers
http://www.ed.gov/teachers/become/about/survivalguide/
This short guide, offered by the U.S. Department of
Education, is offered in its entirety online. It has excellent advice on
dealing with veteran teachers, parents, administrators, and even what
can be gained from the university professors you just left behind! There
are also hints on how us veterans can welcome them..."...First-year
teacher Shalon Cole (South Bend, Indiana) is not likely to forget
walking into her classroom and finding a table covered with presents
from her fellow teachers--a supply of much-needed classroom
materials..." |

A
New Teacher's Survival Guide
http://hannahmeans.bizland.com/
Don't bother with the message board - it's a testimony to
why wide-open message boards are a bad idea! However, retired 2-6 grade
teacher Hannah Means of Connecticut has put this nice general guide to
surviving the new teacher jitters in a friendly and familiar format.
Especially worthwhile is the extensive ideas addressing that scary and
difficult issue, classroom discipline! |

First Day Activities and Helps |

First Day Foundation
http://www.firstday.org/
It's not been updated since last year, but this website of
the Vermont organization has lots of ideas coming from its local event. The
focus was on community, parent, teacher, student, and school celebration of
the first day of classes - a simple idea quite powerful in practice! There's
an 8-minute video free online, and a message board from classes and schools
who implemented the event last year, and this! It's inspiring! |

Printables from edHelper
http://www.edhelper.com/Back_To_School.htm
Featured in our
September 27, 2002
edition, edHelper is an inexpensive pay teacher resource which
offers a lot of things for free online. On this page are event calendars
for August and September, reading comprehension worksheets for
grades1-8, and a bunch of other things...all in a printable format
directly from the site. |

Tips for Teachers
http://www.inspiringteachers.com/tips/
Inspiring Teachers is a Texas-based commercial
online service and publisher, but they offer this page full of
articles and hints as a part of their free resources. There is an
excellent article on "Facing the Changes of a New School year,"
garnished from teacher submissions, as well as other
first-day-of-school ideas and plans. |
Don't
forget...The E-Line
(formerly The Help Desk) has been starting schools for 4 years, and we
have three previous editions dedicated to this time of year...
...and the links and resources available on those pages are
still appropriate and available! |
