Look at last year's contest entries!

Students:

This year's topic is Bullying and School Safety. Bullying could be in person, online (cyberbullying) or through cell phones/texting. Here are some ideas for videos

McGruff - National Crime Prevention Council"Handling a Bully" An ideal Public Service Announcement (PSA) might talk about how to know when you're being bullied, how to handle it, and who to ask for help. Your PSA could be informational, a dramatization, or anything in between...even an animation! Use this McGruff web page from the National Crime Prevention Council for information.

"Take the Pledge." Kentucky Center for School Safety has an online Pledge Against School Violence, a simple form anyone can fill out. The site gives statistics for which counties have had how many pledges. You could promote this pledge in a PSA, either from a state-wide perspective, or from the perspective of your own district!

"Safe Schools In My District." All school districts have some sort of safe schools technologies, procedures, or staff. Your PSA could be on how your school or district handles safety emergencies, or what technology they use to ensure the safety of students. Again, your PSA could be informational or a dramatization illustrating your district or school program.

NEA's National Bullying Awareness Campaign provides lots of suggestions for schools, parents, and communities can do to help the issue of bullying. Lots of great ideas for possible videos can be pulled from this resource!

Stop Bullying Now!The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provides this excellent Stop Bullying Now website. The neat thing about this site is that it has a bunch of example videos, called "Webisodes," which might help with ideas for your video. (Don't steal their ideas...build on them!)

(Thanks to Vicki Ragsdale at Murray State University for help with these ideas.)
